“I deliberately didn’t invite you to the family photo shoot. After all, you’re not really part of the family,” my mother-in-law told me. I smiled. “Strange… because your son is my family now, not yours.”

“Oh my God, what a mess you are! Look at this kitchen!” my mother-in-law exclaimed indignantly. I smiled. “Don’t like it? I’m sure you can find the door all by yourself.”

“My God, have you blown through my son’s salary again?!” my mother-in-law snapped. I smiled. “You’re mistaken. You’d better ask your son who he spent 600 euros on yesterday.”

“Oh my God, Elena, what a mess! Look at this kitchen!” my mother-in-law exclaimed the moment she walked in. She hadn’t even taken off her coat yet. I stood beside the sink with a cup in my hand and looked around.

Two breakfast plates. A frying pan on the counter.

A cutting board with half a tomato on it. And three glasses beside the sink. That was it.

“Good morning to you too, Carmen,” I said.

My mother-in-law set her handbag on a chair and surveyed the kitchen with an expression of utter disgust.

“Good morning? You can really stand there calmly and look at this?”

My husband, Javier, who was sitting at the table looking at something on his phone, glanced up.

“Mom, we literally just finished breakfast.”

“So?” Carmen pointed at the sink. “Is it really that difficult to wash things immediately?”

I looked at the clock on the wall.

It was 10:12 on Sunday morning. “I was going to do it after I finished my coffee.”

Carmen gave a mocking laugh.

“Of course. Afterward.”

She opened the dishwasher.

Then she looked inside the sink.

Finally, she ran a finger along the kitchen counter.

I watched her silently.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing. Just checking.”

“Looks more like a hygiene inspection.”

Javier chuckled quietly.

Carmen immediately turned toward him.

“Don’t laugh. You live here too.”

“Exactly. Which is why I know the kitchen looks perfectly normal.”

She shook her head.

“Men never notice these things.”

I took a deep breath and sipped my coffee.

Carmen came over almost every Sunday.

And every Sunday, she found something to criticize.

One week, it was the curtains.

The next, it was the dust on top of the refrigerator.

Once, she spent fifteen minutes explaining that I folded the bathroom towels incorrectly.

Another Sunday, she opened one of our kitchen cabinets and announced that our plates were arranged “completely illogically.”

But the kitchen remained her favorite subject.

If I cooked, I used too many utensils.

If we ordered food, I was supposedly too lazy to cook.

If I cleaned while cooking, I was wasting time.

If I cleaned afterward, I was careless.

There was never a right way.

There was only Carmen’s way.

That morning, she had supposedly stopped by “just for coffee.”

She hadn’t even been in our house for five minutes.

“And what’s this?” she suddenly asked.

She picked up the sponge beside the sink.

I looked at it.

“A sponge.”

“I know what it is.”

“Great. At least we’ve solved one mystery.”

Javier lowered his head toward his phone to hide his smile.

Carmen pressed her lips together.

“This is old.”

“I bought it four days ago.”

“Well, it looks old.”

“What a tragedy.”

Carmen irritably put the sponge back.

“I don’t understand why you take everything as an attack.”

“Because you walk into my home and within five minutes you’ve criticized the sink, the counter, the dishwasher, and even a sponge.”

“I’m only trying to help you.”

“I didn’t ask for help.”

Carmen stared at me, wide-eyed.

“So now I’m not even allowed to give you advice?”

“You can give me advice.”

I set my cup on the table.

“And I can decide whether I want to take it.”

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Javier put down his phone. He knew that expression on his mother’s face far too well.

“Elena,” Carmen said, “a home says a lot about a woman.”

There it was.

The sentence she had apparently been preparing all morning.

“Does it?”

“Of course. A woman with any self-respect keeps her home clean.”

I looked around the kitchen again.

The floor was clean.

So were the counters.

The only things we hadn’t put away were the dishes from breakfast.

“Well, apparently I’ve lost all my self-respect because of one frying pan.”

“Don’t mock me.”

“I’m not. I’m just trying to understand the seriousness of the situation.”

Javier stepped in.

“Mom, that’s enough.”

But Carmen was already on a roll.

“I raised two children, I worked, and my kitchen never looked like this.”

“Congratulations,” I replied.

“I’m not telling you this so you can congratulate me. Maybe you could learn something from it.”

I could feel my patience slowly running out.

“Carmen, we finished breakfast twenty minutes ago.”

“Twenty minutes is more than enough time to wash a few dishes.”

“Twenty minutes is also enough time to sit down, drink a cup of coffee, and enjoy a Sunday morning.”

She snorted contemptuously.

“That’s exactly what I’m talking about. You always have some excuse.”

I looked directly at her.

“An excuse for what?”

“For being careless.”

Javier raised his voice.

“Mom.”

But Carmen ignored him.

She pointed at the sink again.

“Oh my God, Elena, what a mess! Look at this kitchen!”

This time, I didn’t smile.

I put my cup down on the counter and turned fully toward her.

“You don’t like it?”

Carmen frowned.

“What?”

“My kitchen.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it…”

“You’ve spent the last ten minutes explaining everything that’s wrong with it.”

“Because apparently someone has to tell you.”

I slowly nodded.

“All right.”

Then I pointed toward the hallway.

“In that case, I’m sure you can find the door by yourself.”

Silence.

Javier froze.

Carmen stared at me as though I had just thrown her out of her own house.

“Are you kicking me out?”

“I’m simply offering you a solution.”

“What solution?”

“If being in my kitchen causes you this much suffering, you can simply leave.”

“I am Javier’s mother.”

“I know. You’ve been reminding me regularly for years.”

“Elena…” Javier muttered.

I turned toward him.

“No. Not today.”

Then I looked back at Carmen.

“Every time you come here, you find something to criticize. My kitchen, our furniture, my purchases, the way I clean. And every single time, you claim you’re only trying to ‘help.’”

“Because I’m trying to teach you how to live better.”

“We live perfectly well.”

“Maybe you do.”

I laughed.

“Javier, are you unhappy with the way you live?”

My husband looked at his mother.

“No.”

“Does it bother you that there are two plates in the sink?”

“No.”

“Do you think I’m careless?”

Javier didn’t hesitate for even a second.

“No.”

Carmen looked at him indignantly.

“Of course you’re defending her.”

“I’m not defending her. I’m answering a question.”

Carmen folded her arms.

“You never used to be like this.”

Javier sighed.

“Like what?”

“You used to listen to me when I tried to help you.”

“Mom, calling my wife careless isn’t helping.”

Carmen fell silent.

I picked up the frying pan and placed it in the sink.

“Well, now there’s one more thing to wash,” I said.

Javier burst out laughing.

Carmen shot him an angry look.

“Very funny.”

“It kind of is,” he admitted.

Carmen grabbed her handbag from the chair.

“Fine. I can see I’m not welcome here.”

I didn’t answer.

Carmen headed toward the hallway, but before leaving the kitchen, she turned around one more time.

“I just hope that one day you understand that running a household takes work.”

I looked at her.

“I understand that very well.”

“It certainly doesn’t look like it.”

I smiled.

“Which is exactly why I clean when I decide it’s time to clean—not the second you walk through the door and start ordering me around.”

Carmen opened her mouth, but Javier spoke first.

“Mom, stop.”

For several seconds, she silently stared at both of us.

Then she finally left the kitchen.

A minute later, we heard the front door close behind her.

Javier remained silent.

I looked at the sink.

“All right.”

“What?”

I put the two plates and the glasses into the dishwasher.

“Now I’m actually going to clean the kitchen.”

Javier started laughing.

“Seriously?”

“Of course.”

I switched on the dishwasher and picked up my coffee cup again.

“But only because I decided to.”

Javier raised his cup toward me.

“That’s important.”

“Very important.”

I glanced toward the hallway where Carmen had just disappeared.

“And there’s something else that’s important.”

“What?”

I smiled.

“She really did manage to find the door all by herself.”

“Isn’t it a little excessive to buy something like that with my son’s money?” my mother-in-law sneered. I smiled. “Not at all. Especially since the card is mine.”
