“Darling, have you lost your mind?! The guests are already here for Mom’s anniversary, and the table isn’t even set yet!” my husband shrieked in such a high-pitched voice that he almost sounded like a squealing pig.

I stood in the middle of the kitchen, staring at him for several seconds, unable to believe what I had just heard. Then I looked at the clock.

It was six in the evening.

Several guests were already sitting in the living room, laughing, chatting, and drinking wine while, according to my husband, I was supposed to take care of the entire celebration.

There was just one small detail everyone seemed to have forgotten.

It wasn’t my celebration.

It was his mother’s anniversary.

And I hadn’t even known they were planning to celebrate it at our house until that very morning.

“What?” I asked calmly.

My husband looked at me as though I had just said something completely ridiculous.

“I told you the family was coming over today!”

“No, you didn’t. You told me your mother was having guests tonight.”

“That’s the same thing!”

“No, it isn’t.”

At that moment, his mother appeared in the kitchen doorway.

“What’s going on in here?”

My husband immediately turned toward her. “Nothing, Mom. I’m just telling her to finally set the table.”

My mother-in-law looked at me.

“But I explained perfectly clearly yesterday what she needed to prepare.”

I blinked.

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t speak to me at all yesterday.”

For a few seconds, there was complete silence.

Then my mother-in-law smiled.

“Well, maybe I told the wrong person.” My husband sighed impatiently.

“Whatever. Let’s not start this now. Just do everything and get it over with.”

I looked at him.

“Everything?”

“Yes. Cutlery, plates, salads, meat, dessert… everything.”

“And who cooked the food?”

“You, obviously.”

I smiled.

“Interesting.”

I turned around and opened the refrigerator.

It was practically empty.

A few days earlier, I had needed to travel for work. My husband had promised that while I was away, he would go grocery shopping.

He hadn’t.

And now he expected me to prepare a feast for twenty people in less than an hour.

“Where’s the food?” I asked.

“What food?”

“The food you were supposed to buy.”

“I thought you were going to buy it.”

I started laughing.

Not because it was funny. But because, at that moment, I realized just how absurd the entire situation was.

“Let me make sure I understand this correctly. You invited twenty people into our home, didn’t tell me, didn’t buy any food, and now you’re yelling at me because the table isn’t set yet?”

“Don’t make such a big drama out of this!”

“You’re the one creating the drama.”

My husband’s face turned red.

“Everyone is waiting for you!”

“No. They’re waiting for you and your mother. I didn’t invite anyone.”

My mother-in-law frowned.

“You can’t seriously talk like that. We’re family.”

“Exactly. Which is why I expected at least a little respect.”

Just then, the doorbell rang.

More guests had arrived.

My husband looked at me.

“Smile and go welcome them.”

I picked up my handbag.

“No.”

“What?”

“I’m leaving.”

They both stared at me in disbelief. “Where are you going?” my husband asked.

“Out to dinner.”

“What dinner?”

“The one I reserved for myself.”

I picked up my coat and walked toward the door.

“You’re seriously going to leave us here?”

I turned back toward him.

“I’m leaving you in a situation you created yourselves.”

“But what about the guests?!”

“They’re your guests.”

“And who’s going to serve them?”

“You are.”

And I left.

I went to a small restaurant not far from our house and calmly ordered dinner.

My phone started vibrating almost immediately.

Dozens of messages.

“Where are you?”

“Come back immediately.”m “Mom is furious.”

“The guests are waiting.”

Then a message arrived that made me genuinely laugh for the first time that evening.

“At least tell me where the plates are.”

I put my phone down on the table.

For the first time in a long time, I felt absolutely no urge to rush home and rescue the situation.

When I returned home that evening, the apartment was silent.

The guests had already left.

There were empty bottles and several pizza boxes scattered across the table.

My husband was sitting on the couch.

“So you finally decided to come back.”

“Yes.” “You made me look like an idiot in front of my entire family.”

“No. You managed that all by yourself.”

He stared at me.

“Mom says we should ask you to leave.”

I was silent for a few seconds.

Then I placed my keys on the table.

“Fine.” My husband went pale.

“What?”

“If your family doesn’t want me in a house that the two of us pay for together, then tomorrow we’ll talk to a lawyer and figure out how to divide everything we own.”

All of his confidence disappeared instantly.

“Wait… I didn’t mean it like that.”

“But you said it.”

“I was angry.”

“So was I. The difference is, I wasn’t screaming.”

The next day, for the first time in a very long time, we spoke openly about what was really happening in our marriage.

And something that had been going on for years finally came to the surface.

Without even realizing it, I had automatically taken responsibility for most of the work in our home. I cooked.

I cleaned. I organized visits.

I prepared family gatherings.

I handled birthdays, dinners, and practically everything involving his family.

And he had simply gotten used to it.

So used to it, in fact, that he had started believing it was my responsibility.

But it wasn’t.

In the end, he asked me to give him another chance.

I did.

But on one condition.

“From now on, we make decisions together. No secret celebrations, no inviting guests without discussing it first, and no assuming that I’m automatically going to organize and take care of everything.”

He agreed.

A few months later, his mother organized another big family gathering.

This time, my husband spoke to me about it a week in advance.

Then he called his mother. “Mom, of course we can come. We’d love to see everyone.”

When he ended the call, he turned toward me.

“If you want, we can go together.”

I smiled.

“Sounds good.”

Because sometimes you don’t have to shout to make people respect you.

Sometimes all it takes is refusing, just once, to keep doing everything for people who have started taking your efforts for granted.
