If you think gas station attendants appeared only recently, you’re deeply mistaken. Such service at petrol stations in European countries and the USA has been around for quite a while.
Of course, it was very convenient. Firstly, the customer doesn’t get their hands dirty with gasoline, and therefore, there’s no smell of gasoline.
Secondly, while the attendant is refueling the car, the customer can go into the shop and buy something to eat or drink.
Thirdly, for a small fee, the attendant will clean the headlights and windows of the car.
For your information, in February 1923, the first gas station selling ethyl gasoline opened in Dayton, USA. Its appearance marked a new chapter in the history of gas stations, the first of which appeared in the early 20th century. Before that, motorists had to buy fuel where they bought medicines.
In our country, this type of service began to develop actively only recently, most likely since the late 2000s. And today, as oil companies automate their gas stations and try to eliminate human assistance altogether, the profession of gas station attendant is also losing its relevance.
Take a look at this colorful picture. It depicts a car driver who has arrived at the gas station. As you can see, it’s around the 1960s. The vintage car, the colorful costume of the driver, and the gas pump itself confirm our assumptions.
Can you find the gas station attendant in this picture? The person who should refuel this car?
