What's Hot

“I removed you from our family group. It’s only for family members,” my mother-in-law told me. I burst out laughing. “Thank you. I’ve wanted to leave that group for a long time, but somehow I always felt awkward about doing it.”

“A woman should take her husband’s last name instead of making such a big fuss about it!” my mother-in-law declared. I shrugged. “If you like the name so much, you can keep it.”

“My mother-in-law looked at the gift with a disapproving grimace. ‘Is this the gift you bought my son? You really could’ve gotten him something a little more decent!’ I smiled. ‘I could have. But then I would’ve had to cut back on your gift.’”

“My mother-in-law calmly announced, ‘I canceled your trip! Javier has to be at his aunt’s birthday.’ I pulled out my phone and looked her straight in the eye. ‘Did you just say you canceled our reservation without even telling us?’”

“I canceled your trip. Javier has to be at his aunt’s birthday celebration,” my mother-in-law said so calmly that for a few seconds, I thought she was joking.

I stopped pouring the coffee. “What did you just say?” Carmen took a cookie from the plate and settled comfortably into her chair. “I said I canceled your trip. Aunt Rosa turns sixty on Saturday, and Javier has to be there.”

I looked at my husband. Javier was standing by the kitchen counter with a bottle of water in his hand. His expression told me he had heard exactly the same thing I had.

I slowly pulled my phone out of my pocket.

“Wait a minute. Did you just say you canceled our reservation without us knowing?”

Carmen frowned.

“Don’t make that face. I did it for your own good.”

“For our own good?”

“Yes. Because lately, you two only think about yourselves.” It was Thursday afternoon. Our trip was supposed to start Saturday morning. We had been planning it for almost four months.

Five nights in a small hotel by the sea. Nothing especially luxurious. Just a few days away from work, family obligations, and the endless Sunday visits.

Javier had not taken more than two days off in a row for almost a year.

I had rearranged my vacation schedule at work twice so our dates would match.

We had paid for the hotel.

Bought the tickets.

We had even reserved a car.

And now my mother-in-law was sitting in our kitchen, telling us she had canceled our trip.

I took a deep breath.

“Carmen, what exactly did you cancel?”

She waved a hand casually.

“The hotel.”

I felt my whole body go cold.

“Our hotel?”

“Yes.”

Javier set the bottle down on the counter.

“Mom, how the hell did you cancel our reservation?”

“There’s no need to speak to me like that.”

“I’m asking how you did it.”

Carmen sighed.

“I had the details.”

“What details?”

“The reservation details.”

I stared at her.

Then I remembered something.

Two weeks earlier, Carmen had come over while I was printing our travel documents.

The hotel confirmation had been left on the dining table.

Only for a few minutes.

But apparently, that had been enough.

I opened my email on my phone.

Searched for the hotel’s name.

And there it was.

A message received that very morning.

“Your reservation has been successfully canceled.”

My heart started racing.

“I can’t believe this.”

Javier came closer.

“Let me see.”

I showed him the screen.

His face changed immediately.

“Mom.”

Carmen shrugged.

“What?”

“Did you actually call the hotel and cancel our room?”

“I already told you I did.”

“Pretending to be one of us?”

For the first time, Carmen looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t have to pretend to be anyone. I had the booking number and the last name.”

“That doesn’t answer my question,” I said.

Carmen shot me an irritated look.

“Elena, don’t turn this into a drama.”

I gave a short laugh.

“You secretly cancel our vacation, and I’m the one turning it into a drama?”

“It’s Rosa’s birthday!”

“So?”

Carmen’s eyes widened.

“What do you mean, ‘so’? You only turn sixty once!”

“And we booked this trip four months ago.”

“You can travel some other time.”

Javier shook his head.

“No, Mom. We can’t.”

“Of course you can.”

“I requested these days off three months ago.”

“Then ask for different days.”

“That’s not how it works.”

Carmen tapped her fingers lightly against the table.

“Javier, family should be more important than some hotel.”

“Family should also respect our decisions.”

Carmen looked at him as if he had just betrayed her.

“Now you’re talking like her?”

I felt heat rise to my face.

“Don’t drag me into this.”

“Ever since you got together with Elena, everything is ‘our plans,’ ‘our time,’ ‘our decisions.’”

“Because we’re married,” Javier replied. “That’s normal.”

Carmen stood up.

“And your aunt? She means nothing to you?”

“Of course she does.”

“Then you have to be there.”

“No. I have to decide for myself whether I’m going to be there.”

Carmen opened her mouth, but Javier continued.

“If I already have a trip booked, you can ask me. You can call me. You can tell me you’d like us to change our plans.”

He pointed at my phone.

“But what you cannot do is secretly cancel our reservation.”

Carmen crossed her arms.

“I knew you’d say no.”

“Exactly,” I said.

She looked at me.

“What?”

“You just explained exactly why you did it. You knew we would say no, so you decided to take away our choice.”

Carmen said nothing.

“That isn’t caring about family,” I continued. “That’s trying to control our decisions.”

“What an ugly word!”

“But an accurate one.”

Javier rubbed a hand over his face.

“Did we get the money back?”

Carmen blinked.

“What?”

“The money for the hotel.”

“I assume so.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

They both turned toward me.

I had opened the cancellation policy.

I read it again to make sure.

“The free cancellation period ended three days ago.”

Javier stepped closer.

“How much did we lose?”

I showed him the screen.

“Four hundred and eighty euros.”

The kitchen went silent.

Carmen turned slightly pale.

“That can’t be right.”

“It says it right here.”

“I’m sure if you call and explain…”

“Explain what?” I asked. “That my mother-in-law found our reservation and canceled it without our permission?”

“You don’t have to put it like that.”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“How would you like me to put it?”

Javier held out his hand.

“Give me the phone.”

I handed it to him.

“What are you going to do?”

“Call the hotel.”

Carmen took a step toward him.

“Javier, don’t be ridiculous. It’s already canceled. You’re coming to Rosa’s birthday, and that’s the end of it.”

Javier looked up.

“No.”

“What?”

“Even if we can’t get the room back, we’re not going to the birthday.”

Carmen froze.

“Are you punishing me?”

“No. I’m making it clear that canceling our plans does not mean we automatically do whatever you want.”

“But Rosa isn’t to blame!”

“Then you shouldn’t have dragged her into this.”

Carmen pointed at me.

“This is coming from her.”

“No,” Javier said.

“Of course it is.”

“Mom, look at me.”

She did.

“I’m angry too.”

Carmen fell silent.

Javier dialed the hotel.

I could hear the ringing.

A woman answered.

Javier carefully explained the situation without going into too much detail.

He gave our name, the reservation number, and our arrival date.

Then he waited.

His expression suddenly changed.

“Yes… I understand.”

Another pause.

“Really?”

He looked at me.

“Thank you so much. Yes, please.”

He hung up about a minute later.

“Well?” I asked.

Javier smiled for the first time since the conversation had started.

“They hadn’t given the room to anyone else yet.”

Relief flooded through me.

“Can they restore the reservation?”

“Yes.”

Carmen frowned.

“What do you mean, restore it?”

Javier put my phone back on the table.

“They reactivated the booking.”

“But…”

“We’re leaving Saturday.”

Carmen’s entire expression changed.

“Javier, you can’t do this to me.”

“Do what to you?”

“Everyone expects you to be there!”

“Then you’ll have to explain that I already had other plans.”

“They’re going to ask me why you aren’t coming!”

The way Carmen said it suddenly made me realize something.

“Wait.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“Did you already tell them we were coming?”

Carmen didn’t answer.

Javier narrowed his eyes.

“Mom.”

“Well…”

“Did you tell them we’d be there before even talking to us?”

“Rosa was arranging the seating and needed to know how many people were coming.”

“And you confirmed for us?”

“I said you’d be there.”

Javier gave a humorless laugh.

“Unbelievable.”

“Because I thought you’d come to your senses!”

“No. You thought that if you decided everything before asking me, I’d have no choice but to obey.”

“Don’t talk like that.”

“That’s exactly what you did.”

Carmen grabbed her purse.

“Fine. Go on your trip. Have fun. I’ll be the one who has to explain everything to the whole family.”

I leaned against the table.

“You can tell them the truth.”

Carmen turned toward me.

“What truth?”

“That you confirmed our attendance without asking us, then canceled our reservation to force us to go.”

Her face hardened.

“Don’t you dare tell anyone that.”

“I don’t have to tell anyone anything.”

I looked at Javier.

“But if someone asks why we aren’t there, I’m not going to lie either.”

Carmen opened her mouth.

She had no answer.

Five minutes later, she left without finishing her coffee.

I thought that would be the end of it.

I was wrong.

On Friday evening, Javier got a call from Aunt Rosa.

I was finishing packing when he came into the bedroom with the phone pressed to his ear.

“Yes, Aunt Rosa… I know.”

Pause.

“No, we haven’t changed our minds.”

Another pause.

Then Javier looked at me in surprise.

“What did Mom tell you?”

I went still.

A few minutes later, he ended the call.

“What happened?”

Javier put his phone on the bed.

“Mom told her that you deliberately planned the trip so I wouldn’t go to her birthday.”

I stared at him.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“But we booked the trip four months before we even knew the date of the party.”

“Exactly.”

“And what did you tell her?”

Javier smiled faintly.

“The truth.”

It turned out that Rosa knew nothing about the hotel cancellation.

And when Javier told her what had happened, there was a long silence on the other end of the line.

Then Rosa said something neither of us expected.

“Javier, come see me another day. And please, go on vacation with your wife. I never asked your mother to cancel anything.”

When Carmen found out, she stopped calling us for a week.

Our trip, on the other hand, was wonderful.

On Saturday morning, while we were waiting to board, Javier received a message from Lucía.

It was a photo from the party.

Carmen was sitting beside Aunt Rosa with such a serious expression that she looked as though someone owed her money.

Under the photo, Lucía had written:

“Mom has just explained for the third time why you two aren’t here. Every version is different.”

I laughed.

Javier put his phone away.

“You know what the best part is?”

“What?”

“Before all this happened, I was actually thinking about changing the trip so I could go to the birthday.”

I looked at him in surprise.

“Seriously?”

“Yes. I was going to talk to you about it that evening.”

“And now?”

Javier looked toward the boarding gate.

“Now I think my mother just taught me a very important lesson.”

“Which one?”

He smiled.

“If you want someone to do something for you, it’s much better to ask them than to try to decide for them.”

Two weeks later, Carmen came back to our house.

She didn’t mention the trip.

She didn’t apologize.

But before she left, she placed an envelope on the table.

Inside were 480 euros.

And a short note:

“In case the hotel ended up charging you for the cancellation.”

The hotel had charged us nothing.

Javier wanted to give the money back.

I shook my head.

“Wait.”

“For what?”

I smiled and put the envelope in a drawer.

“The next time someone decides to cancel our vacation without asking us, we’ll already have an emergency fund.”

Javier tried to hold back his laughter.

He couldn’t.

And from that day on, we changed one more thing.

Reservations, tickets, and travel documents were never left lying on the table when Carmen came to visit.

Because we had learned that some people confuse “being part of the family” with having the right to make decisions for everyone else.

And sometimes the only way to teach them the difference is not to change your plans when they try to change them for you.

“I deliberately didn’t invite you to the family photo shoot. After all, you’re not really part of the family,” my mother-in-law told me. I smiled. “Strange… because your son is my family now, not yours.”
